ABSTRACT
Through the development of mammals, distinct types of stem cells are generated. Each stem cell is characterized for its differentiation potential and among them, the zygote has the greatest potential. Once tissues have been formed, almost in all of them are found somatic stem cells which have a restricted differentiation potential. Examples of these cells are mesenchymal stem cells, which are located in bone marrow, and because of their biological characteristics they are potentially applicable in cell therapy protocols. In particular, these cells have the capacity of hematopoietic support and immunosuppressive properties; because of that, they have been used to improve hematopoietic stem cells transplantation and for the treatment of graft-versus-host disease.
