ABSTRACT
Introduction: Weight loss is frequent in the burn patient, and might hinder the healing and rehabilitation processes.
Material and method: Body weight was recorded in 28 patients (Men: 55.0%; Average age: 45.1 ± 12.9 years; BBSA Burn Body Surface Area: 34.6 ± 17.2%; All-causes-Mortality: 28.6%) during 5 weeks in the Burn Unit, “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Clinical Surgical Hospital (Havana City, Cuba), between August of 2009 and January of 2013. Variation occurred in patient’s body weight at the end of each week was correlated with age and BBSA, Total Lymphocytes Count (TLC) and serum Albumin, and the occurrence of complications (death included). Data were treated according the “Intention-To-Treat” principle, in anticipation of different lengths of stay in the Unit.
Results: Body weight variation was -6.2 ± 6.5 Kg (-8.0 ± 6.3%) upon discharge from the unit. Weight loss was observed in 85.7% of the assisted patients. Weight loss was evident from the first week of stay in the unit, and progressed as the stay was prolonged. Weight loss was also independent from the patient’s age, the BBSA, the occurrence of complications, and the condition upon discharge from the Unit.
Conclusions: Weight loss is a prevalent finding in the burn patient, but it was not (apparently) determined by a higher age, a more extended BBSA, the behavior of the biochemical variables of nutritional interest, and the post-injury evolution. Relationship between variation of weight and demographical, clinical and biochemical variables might be mediated by the nutritional support protocols currently in place the Burn Unit.
