Ramsay Hunt syndrome: report of two cases and review of the literature

ABSTRACT

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is caused by varicella zoster virus reactivation in the geniculate ganglia, causing peripheral facial paralysis, vesicular lesions, radiculoneuropathy and ganglionitis. May be accompanied by other signs and symptoms such as tinnitus, hearing loss, nausea, vomiting and dizziness. Represents about 8% of all peripheral palsies. The diagnosis is clinical. In some cases, the polymorphism of the skin lesions may difficult diagnosis; in these cases Tzanck test can be useful to confirm herpetic infection.
