ABSTRACT
Background: Population aging affects mobility and mortality. Hip fractures
result in weakness, permanent inability or death. Surgical treatment
may complicate with fragility status-related conditions or diseases, turning
fractures into a common and devastating pathology in the elderly.
Material and method: An observational, longitudinal, retrospective and
descriptive study of patients submitted to surgery due to transtrochanteric
fracture from January to December 2012. Data were obtained from
clinical records, and analyzed through central trend resume measures.
Results: 84 surgeries were performed due to diagnosis of transtrochanteric
fracture, patient´s age showed a mean of 76.8 years old, and most
frequent diseases were Diabetes Mellitus 43 patients, hypertension
32 patients, ischemic heart disease 9 patients, chronic renal failure 8
patients, heart failure 5 patients and stroke sequels 3 patients. 19 patients
had no chronic illness. Mortality was observed in 14 (16.66%)
patients, from which 7 passed away in the peri-operatoy period, the
main causes of death were pneumonia, heart attack, sepsis, acidosis
and gastrointestinal bleeding. 13 cases had some chronic illness, among
deceased patients.
Conclusion: There was an outstanding incidence for Diabetes Mellitus,
hypertension and their chronic complications in patients suffering perioperative
death during initial hospitalization.
