ABSTRACT
Suicide can be considered a multidimensional phenomenon resulting from a complex interaction
of biological, genetic, psychological, sociological and environmental factors. Worldwide,
suicide is one of the most frequent causes of death. Estimates by the Pan American Health
Organization (PAHO) and World Health Organization (WHO) indicate that by 2020 more than
a million and half people die by suicide and between 10 and 20 times more people will perform
a suicide attempted. This represents a death by suicide in the world every 20 seconds
and one suicide attempt every 1-2 seconds. Suicidal behavior is not random behavior since
from the first scientific descriptions made, it was observed that it is associated to several factors
and could be predicted to some extent. Between 40 and 60 percent of people who commit
suicide have consulted a general practitioner in the month before the suicide, therefore,
identify, assess and manage suicidal patients is an important task of physicians in primary
care who plays a crucial role in preventing suicide.
