ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the infection prevalence by
H. pylori in patients having digestive symptoms who were referred to Iván Portuondo hospital of Artemisa and relate it to sociodemographic and clinical variables.
Methods: A transverse study carried out between February 2008 and July 2009. The histological and microbiological, (culture and fast urease test) were developed. Each patient was taken three biopsy fragments from the gastric mucosa of the antral region. The association of different variables with the infection by
H. pylori was determined.
Results: The prevalence of
H. pylori was 47,1%. Statistically significant association was found of infection in patients of mixed race (RP: 1,60; IC:[1,12-2,29]), with low educational level (RP: 2,17, IC[1,83-2,59], who lived in crowded conditions (RP: 1,94, IC: [1,45-2,60]). All cases with rugal hyperplastic gastritis, intestinal metaplasia and MALT lymphoma, were infected by
H. pylori, as well as 80%-90% of the cases with active chronic gastritis.
Conclusions: A high prevalence of infection by
H. pylori was found in the patients studied associated, from the sociodemographic view point, with the low educational level, crowded conditions, half-breed skin and well-water consumption. It was also linked to various digestive signs and symptoms, chronic and acute gastritis, gastrodeudenal ulcer, and in particular, rugal hyperplastic gastritis, intestinal metaplasis and gastric lymphoma.
