ABSTRACT
Introduction: The nonmotor symptoms in Parkinson’s disease (PD) are considered of great importance due to their high frequency
and their impact on the quality of life of patients. The Movement Disorder Socierty-Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale, or
MDS- UPDRS, Part I assesses the main non-motor symptoms of the disease.
Objective: To describe and analyze the frequency of non-motor symptoms in a sample of PD patients from several centers of
second and third in Mexico using the MDS-UPDRS.
Methods: We carried out a cross-sectional study with 423 patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease from five hospitals in
Mexico. All patients were assessed using the Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scales parts I to IV.
The frequency of non-motor symptoms and their association with other clinical variables was analyzed.
Results: A total of 228 men and 195 women were included. The mean age of the subjects was 61.8 ± 12.5 years. The most frequent
symptoms were cognitive impairment (71.9 %), pain (65.7 %), fatigue (61.7%) and depression (57.2%). The least frequent were
psychosis (16.8 %) and dopaminergic dysregulation (5.4 %). There were significant differences in the depressive symptoms item,
being the highest score in women (0.9 ± 1
vs. 1.2 ± 1.1, p = 0.012). The total score of the part I was higher in advanced stages of
PD (p = 0.003).
Conclusions: The frequency of most of the non-motor based on Part I of the MDS- UPDRS symptoms are comparable to those
reported in other studies in Mexican population.
