ABSTRACT
The use of ultrasonography (USG) is a daily practice in the intensive care unit (ICU). USG Has been used in the assessment of diaphragm anatomy and kinetics. Ultrasound provides a simple, non-invasive method of quantifying diaphragmatic movement in a variety of normal and pathological conditions in the critically ill. USG can assess the characteristics of diaphragmatic movement, special patterns of motion and changes in diaphragmatic thickness during respiration. This parameters can provide information in the assessment and follow-up of different scenarios like patient-ventilator interactions and weaning. The aim of this paper is to review the physiology of the diaphragm, its ultrasonographic evaluation and the application of this technique in the critically ill.
