ABSTRACT
Introduction: Surgical treatment of refractory epilepsy implies a risk of complications that, if identified in an early stage and are
handled correctly, will not alter the outcome of the surgery.
Objective: To describe the complications of the surgical treatment for epilepsy in patients of the Epilepsy Clinic of the General
Hospital of Mexico, a third-level reference institution of the whole country.
Methods: A retrospective revision of the patients who were operated on from 1992 to 2013 was performed. A total of 227 patients
were reviewed. Ten patients with lesions such as tumors, cysticercosis, venous malformations, and 2 with incomplete reports
were excluded.
Results: A total of 12.7% of the patients had complications during the first 30 days after surgery, of whom 6.32% were intraoperative,
4.47% immediate, and 3.08% mediate after surgery. A total of 62.02% occurred after temporal lobectomy and 17.24% after
implanting diagnostic electrodes. The most common were ischemic lesions.
Conclusion: In our institution the frequency of postsurgical complications is within the lower range that has been reported in the
literature. The most frequent are those occurring during the surgery.
