ABSTRACT
Objective: To review the new knowledge about using decompressive craniectomy in the management of severe head injuries.
Development: Severe traumatic brain injury is a major cause of death and disability in the world. The control of elevated intracranial pressure is fundamental to the management of these patients and the literature published to date does not reveal definitive evidence regarding the effectiveness and indications of decompressive craniectomy. We have reviewed the pathophysiology of intracranial hypertension, the surgical procedures of decompressive craniectomy in severe head injury, looking for its indications and associated complications.
Conclusions: Decompressive craniectomy seems to have a satisfactory effect on the outcome improving the quality of life of patients with severe head injuries.
