ABSTRACT
Objective: To characterize the patients with diagnose of severe brain trauma.
Methods: A descriptive study, retrospective of the crosswise type was perform, that included patients with the diagnosis of severe brain trauma, admitted in Neurosurgery service and the Drive of Intensive Cares Unit or Drive of Politrauma Unit of the University Hospital “Manuel Ascunce Domenech” of the city of Camagüey of January of 2008 to December of 2011. The specimen was incorporated with 155 patients with diagnose of severe brain trauma that performed the insert approaches and exclusion.
Results: The most affected group of ages was that of thirty and one to forty five years, the predominant sex was the masculine one. The type of more frequent lesion was the acute subdural hematoma with 32%. Surgical techniques more used were measurement of intracranial pressure and trauma flap with 32 and 22%. The mortality in this series was 60%. The biggest number of deceased’s happened in patients older than 60 years.
Conclusions: The mortality of the severe brain trauma was high caused by different factors like: the quality of pre hospitalary medical attention, the characteristics of primary lesions and the increase in the number of elderly patients. To show the results in a series of patients with head trauma monitored by means of sequential CT scan of the head, insisting in the determination of prognostic factors related with significant tomographic worsening of the intracranial lesions.
