ABSTRACT
Introduction.
Blindness is the handicap with most medic-social affectation in the human being, in these times retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) emerge as
an important cause of visual handicap and blindness in the Mexican Republic. Premature newborns under the 32 weeks' gestation exposed to
the excessive use of oxygen or other therapeutic methods in intensive therapy unchain physiological mechanisms for the development of the
disease. It is important to be aware of the risk factors in each unit of neonatal intensive care. We undertook the task of familiarizing with these
factors in the neonatal intensive care unit in the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara.
Material y Methods.
We studied cases and controls performed during the period of 2011 to 2012, where the patients were grouped according to the similar
characteristics to establish the risk factors. For the inferential analysis of quantitative variables we used the Mann-Whitney U test due to the
asymmetric curve of data distribution. Association was determined with odds ratio (OR) of risk factors associated to surgical and non-surgical
retinopathy. We determined p ‹ 00.5 for the level of statistical significance and a database using Excel (Microsoft Office).
Results.
The variables with statistical significance in our study were: inadequate use of oxygen, transfusions and the use of erythropoietin.
Discussion.
It is of utmost importance establishing correct policies for the adequate use of oxygen, sepsis prevention and the rational use of blood and
blood products, among other actions. The prevention is the best medicine and in ROP is a cornerstone.
