Introduction. Neonatal mortality worldwide and in the Mexican Republic is a severe problem of public health. The study of the causes of morbidity and mortality on newborns is an evaluation method concerning the performance and efficiency of the neonatal intensive care units, knowing this and other associated data will allow providing a higher quality medical attention.Objective. To know the morbidity and mortality at the external neonatal intensive care unit of the Civil Hospital during a period of 8 years, 2005 to 2012.
Material y Methods. Retrospective, observational, cross-sectional and descriptive study on the clinical history files in every minor under 28 days of age admitted to the intensive care unit. The diagnostics were analyzed according to the Worlds Health Organization's International Classification of diseases ICD-10. The variables studied were: Mother's place of residence, diagnostic of admittance, cause of decease and proportion of deaths by disease and other diseases associated to the death. The data was compiled and analyzed in Excel.
Results. From a total of 4131 admittances, 389 (9.4%) patients perished. The main cause of admittance was prematurity with 30.8% (n=1274), st followed by Respiratory distress syndrome with 9.8% (n=408). The main causes of death included respiratory failure in 1 place with 52% (n=202), septic shock with 25% (n=97), cardiogenic shock with 11% (n=43). The pathologies or diagnostics of admittance presenting a high instance of deaths according to the frequency were: Central nervous system disease with 50% and cardiologic congenital anomalies with 45%.
Discussion. The main causes of morbidity observed in our study were similar to those reported by other institutions including the WHO. We have observed the epidemiological transition in which the higher mortality was previously due to pathologies and prematurity finding congenital malformations take the first places.
