ABSTRACT
Because of the impact that the problems of health have on the quality of life of people is extremely important to evaluate the functional condition of each patient before the risk of disability. The Barthel Index (BI) is an instrument that measures the capacity of a person to carry out ten Activities of Daily Living (ADL), considered as basic, obtaining a quantitative estimation of its degree of independence. It was proposed in 1955 and multiple versions of the same exist. It is easy to apply, with high degree of reliability and validity, capable to detect changes, easy to interpret, easy application and can be adapted to different cultural environments.
