ABSTRACT
Periodontal disease is one of the most common chronic diseases of infectious origin in humans, being the respiratory tract in relation to the oral cavity may be an association between periodontal disease and respiratory diseases. Sign respiratory diseases are the most commonly chronic obstructive pulmonary disease characterized by progressive airflow obstruction and airway inflammation, pneumonia, an infection that affects the lung parenchyma, with exudative and cellular infiltration alveoli, interstitium and bronchioles. The objective of this study aims to assess whether an association between periodontal disease and respiratory through the review of available literature exists diseases. The search was performed manually in the 4 major magazines of Periodontology, according to the impact factor of the
ISI Web of Knowledge: Journal of Clinical Periodontology, Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Periodontal Research, and The International Journal of Periodontics &
Restorative Dentistry. Also in the Cochrane database using key words.
Conclusion: There is an association between periodontal status and development of respiratory diseases and their complications.
