ABSTRACT
Nearly half of all dog bites
involve an animal belonging
to the family of the victim or
neighbors. A large percentage
of dog bite victims are
children. Although most are
not aggressive breeds, any dog
can attack when threatened.
All dog bites carry a risk of
bacterial or viral infection. So
the risk assessment tetanus
and infection of rabies virus,
and then the empirical use
of prophylactic antibiotics
and tetanus and rabies
immunization, are essential in
the treatment of dog bites.
