ABSTRACT
Endometriosis is a benign
chronic inflammatory disease
characterized by the presence
of endometrial tissue outside
the uterine cavity, typically
within the pelvis. Since initial
descriptions of the disease,
several theories have been
proposed to explain the genesis
of endometriosis; however none
can adequately expound the
pathophysiology of the disease.
Because of that reason, recent
studies on endometriosis have
focused on immunological and
endocrinological events that
are part of the pathophysiology
of endometriosis. Studies
have found that the abnormal
immune response of women
with endometriosis is mainly
characterized by an imbalance
between the action of M1 and
M2 type macrophages and such
imbalance triggers a series of
events that culminate in the
development of the disease.
