Oncoplastic surgery in breast cancer

ABSTRACT

The surgical treatment of breast cancer has shown a significant shift towards less radical procedures, taking the breast conserving surgery an increasingly important role; however, is described that up to 30% of patients may have unsatisfactory cosmetic results, being the origin of oncoplastic breast cancer surgery. These techniques combine resective oncologic principles of breast cancer with reconstructive plastic surgery procedures breast tumor removal achieved with wider surgical margins without compromising cosmesis and allowing the preservation of the mammary gland in women who otherwise way should have undergone mastectomy for complete removal of the lesion. The oncological safety of oncoplastic procedures has been demonstrated.
