ABSTRACT
Objective: To describe the endoscopic characteristics found in deceased patients with upper GI hemorrhage associated with gastroduodenal peptic ulcer.Method: A descriptive investigation of a series of cases that occurred in the Provincial Clinical-Surgical Teaching Hospital “Saturnino Lora Torres”, Santiago, Cuba, during the period of January 1, 2002 to December 2011, in patients with death by non-varicose upper GI hemorrhage associated with peptic acid disease. A total of 28 patients were analyzed whom received emergency endoscopy at the time of admission.
Results: 66.6% of patients were males and 75.7% were over the age of 60. According to the Forest classification, 37% were grupo IIa and 25.8% grupo III. According to lesion characteristics in 31.6% of lesions were precise duodenal and 23.7% precise gastric, both with sizes ≤ 2 cm. The most frequent conditions for deciding surgical treatment from an endoscopic point of view were an ulcer › 2cm and a Forrest I endoscopy.
Conclusions: The majority of patients were male, above the age of 60, from groups IIa and III, with principal lesion sites being precise duodenal and gastric, less than or equal to 2cm.
