ABSTRACT
Introduction: Glaucoma is a disease characterized by morphologic changes in the optic nerve, the retinal nerve fiber layer and a typical pattern in the visual field. The study of the visual field is the most common procedure to estimate the damages caused by glaucoma, and more recently the use of the Heidelberg Retinal Tomography allows a quantitative valuation of structural parameters of the optic nerve.
Methods: A transversal descriptive study of 100 patients (156 eyes) with earlier stages of glaucoma was conducted. HRT II and standard automated perimetry (white to white test) was performed.
Results: 73% of patients showed a normal media deviation indication of a normal visual field related to early stage of glaucoma. However Heidelberg Retinal Tomography parameters demonstrated pathological values of ring volume and cup area regarding to normal media deviation.
Conclusions: That these parameters are very important in the structure function relationship at early stages of glaucoma.
