ABSTRACT
The use of antibiotics in Dentistry and Periodontology is extensively accepted. However, an evidence and criteria review about the use of antimicrobials show an empiric way of prescription. In this brief review is included a historic perspective and actual panorama about the infectious nature of periodontal diseases, the evidence about the use of antibiotics in the main diseases of the periodontal tissues and the guidelines to antibiotic prophylaxis.
