ABSTRACT
Introduction: Chronic and aggressive periodontitis are characterized by gingival insertion loss and alveolar bone destruction. However, insertion loss is faster in aggressive periodontitis than in the chronic variety. The immune-inflammatory response and the angiogenesis in periodontitis is initiated by the release of a wide variety of molecules, including IL-12, IL-18, IFN-γ and their receptors on T and NK cells. It has been reported that levels of IL-12 and IL-18 in patients with aggressive periodontitis are different to those in individuals with the chronic one. Nevertheless, these cytokine receptors have not been studied regarding this pathology.
Material and methods: IFN-γR expression was detected by immunohistochemistry in gingival tissue samples of people with chronic periodontitis, aggressive periodontitis and healthy subjects.
Results: We found no significant differences in the IFN-γ expression (Mann-Whitney U) of the three groups, but we did observe an increased IFN-γR2 expression in the endothelial cells of all groups. We could also notice a significant increase in the vascularity and vessel diameter of the patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis when compared to healthy subjects.
Conclusions: We detected an increased vascularity in patients with aggressive and chronic periodontitis, as well as an increase in the expression of IFN-γR2 in all the study groups.
