ABSTRACT
Excess body weight (overweight and obesity
included) is an important risk factor to take into
account in the primary/secondary prevention of
cerebrovascular disease. The Nutritional
Support Group (NST) conducts an ambulatory
Obesity Clinic since its inception in 2007 in the
Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (INN),
given the affluence of patients assisted at the
hospital Service of Cerebrovascular Disease in
whom an excessive weight for height concurs.
More than 80.0% of these patients were women.
Adherence to body weight reduction treatment in
this subgroup was estimated in 70.0%. The
purpose of this study was to identify the causes
for abandonment by overweight, ambulatoryassisted
women of body weight reduction.
Adherence to treatment was dependent on
woman’s age, level of instruction, job position,
and place of residence. Adherence was higher
among women younger than 60 years,
senior/university level of instruction, working in
jobs non-related with food manipulation, and
living in Havana City. Adherence was
independent from Body Mass Index and previous
history of ictus. Women’s age, level of
instruction, job position, and place of residence
should be taken into account when designing
dietetic, conative and cognitive interventions to
be specific, adequate and effective for reduction
of body weight, in order to secure the prevention
of cerebrovascular disease.
