ABSTRACT
Nutrient energy malnutrition causes metabolic changes which lead to profound alterations of the functions of the digestive system. Refeeding after moderate undernutrition should accomplish the remission of morphofunctional alterations occurred in the digestive system. An
undernutrition model was created after restricting during 28 days 75% of the daily requirements for age of 32 newly born Wistar male rats. Once food restriction was completed,
rats were refed during 3 subsequent weeks. Refeeding resulted in an increase of the weight of the small bowel, but it did not produce changes in its length, neither the protein content nor the disaccharidase activity of jejunum mucosa, being the values of these three morphometric
characteristics lower than those observed in non-treated rats. Although refeeding might cause an increase in the weight of the small bowel, it is unlikely the refed organ to be able to support the nutritional state of the animal.
