ABSTRACT
The already demonstrated relationship between the energy nutrient malnutrient and the onset of respiratory insufficiency is reviewed, and viceversa. Distinctions are made between the behaviour and particularities of the acute and chronic forms of the respiratory insufficiency. A representative disease or syndrome is choosen in both cases for illustrative purposes. The situations that might lead to prolonged mechanical ventilation of the patient are presented, as well as their treatment for minimizing their response to the stress and to reduce the ventilation time, and the weaning in conjunction with an adequate nutritional support as part of the treatment of the respiratory insufficiency. Corresponding changes and recommendations are made.
