ABSTRACT
Introduction: the paragangliomas are neoplasias of low frequency with or without family history. The inheritance pattern is dominant autosomal. They have a great variety of locations such as head and neck sites; the majority of them are in the carotid body, vagus nerve or in the jugular tympanic area. It's a great importance to make the correct diagnosis in a daily clinical practice in spite of the rareness and the small macroscopic dimensions.
Objective: to present a case of extra-adrenal retroperitoneal paragangliomas.
Case Presentation: we present a male patient, 57 years old. The radiologic and laboratory findings with the scarcity of clinical symptoms suggested a differential diagnosis between a cyst versus retroperitoneal tumor. The chirurgical removal and biopsy was made for the definitive diagnosis. The operatory and anesthetic procedures were made without any difficulty. The post operatory clinical course was favorable.
Conclusions: the retroperitoneal paragangliomas constitute a group of neoplasias extremely rare. There a few cases reported in the literature around the world. The histological and immune histochemistry techniques corroborate the clinical diagnosis.
