Relation of weight and age at puberty, testicular development and seminal characteristics in rambouillet lambs

ABSTRACT
In order to determine the correlation between different factors involved with the onset of
puberty, 18 Rambouillet weaned lambs with 60 days of age and weighing 24.27± 3.5 kg
were used. After detachment of the urethral extension the semen extraction began for
quantitative analysis (volume and concentration) and qualitative (morphology and
motility) each 14 days until the onset of puberty. Measurements of testicular
circumference and diameter began at 3 months and then every 14 days until the onset
of puberty, in the same way was done with the weight of the lambs. There was a positive
correlation (P‹0.01) between the weight of the lambs and scrotal circumference
(r=0.56), scrotal circumference and testicular diameter (r=0.72), between the testicular
diameter (P‹0.05) and sperm motility (r=0.51), and the volume of the ejaculate (P‹0.05)
and sperm motility (r=0.53). On the other hand, there was a negative correlation
(P‹0.01) between the percentages of normal sperm and primary (r=-0.94) and
secondary (r=-.60) malformations. The close relationship between some reproductive
characteristics with age and weight of lambs at puberty and among themselves, as well
as the sale of lambs for stallion between 6-7 months of age requires this type of
evidence.
