ABSTRACT
Introduction and objectives: Acute coronary syndrome has a high impact on morbidity and mortality rates of the developed world. The objective of this research was to determine the morbidity for acute coronary syndrome and its relation to some variables.
Method: An epidemiological, observational, descriptive study was performed in 30 patients with the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome without ST elevation, treated at the Intensive Care Unit of the Integral Diagnostic Center "José Gregorio Hernandez,” Ortiz municipality, Guárico state, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, in the period between January1st to December 31st, 2007.
Results: Unstable angina was the most frequent disease (80.0%) in these patients. Patients over 49 years (80%), female (63.3%), black skin, from urban communities and middle school studies were predominant. Tobacco smoking was the most frequent risk factor (56.6%), followed by hypertension (43.3%) and obesity (26.6%). Arrhythmias and pump failure were common in patients with infarction; and persistent chest pain, in patients with unstable angina. There was one death–a patient over sixty years old and less than three-day stay- due to myocardial infarction.
Conclusions: Unstable angina predominated and the most frequently associated risk factors were hypertension and smoking.
