Introduction: Chlamydia trachomatis is an intracellular bacterium considered one of the sexually transmitted pathogens with high prevalence worldwide. Objective: to characterize the reproductive outcome in infertile patients with Chlamydia trachomatis infection at “Mariana Grajales” Gynecoobstetric Hospital.
Material and method: a prospective study between January 2009 and December 2010 was conducted , the population was 335 infertile women with tuboperitoneal involvement, convenience sample was 155 women with positive test results for Chlamydia trachomatis and variables studied were the type of contraceptive used, the aftermath, sexually transmitted infections associated and reproductive outcome; the Chi-square test was used to establish relationships between variables.
Results: the most popular contraceptive method was the intrauterine device (38.0%), there was a statistics significant association between use intrauterine device and the infection by Chlamydia trachomatis (X2=23.7 and ρ=0.01) in 32 patients (18.9%) were presented pelvic inflammatory disease and 34 (20.1%) had a tubal obstruction, it was found statistics significant association between the occurrence of sequelae and Chlamydia trachomatis infection (X2=17.8 and ρ=0.04), the organism most commonly associated was Mycoplasma hominis 14, 9.0%) in 124 patients (80.0%) and no pregnancy was achieved, only in 17 (11.0%) normal pregnancy was achieved.
Conclusions: Chlamydia trachomatis infection compromises female fertility due to tubal obstructive sequels with little chance of achieving pregnancy.
