ABSTRACT
Since the discovery of atrial fibrillation, this disease has become a huge potential market, which attracts considerable resources for its research. In the multivariate models, the established cardiovascular disease, hypertension, age and left ventricular hypertrophy had the strongest association with atrial fibrillation. In the pathophysiologic basis of the P- wave dispersion, an emphasis is made on the alterations of atrial action potential, delayed impulse propagation through the atria and electrical remodeling of the walls of these cardiac chambers. The methodology for the measurement of the P-wave has been extensively studied and discussed at international symposia. It is known that the most reliable method is to use a digital signal with high resolution screen. In daily medical practice, the use of this technology is being limited, and the use of the ECG is a routine practice that we should not forget for the measurement of the P-wave and the calculation of its dispersion. The digital method can be well used in the design of studies, but the everyday use of the electrocardiogram should strengthen the practice of each electrocardiographist to identify risk patients with higher values of dispersion of the wave.
