Model of application and report of follow-up colonoscopy in patients who underwent surgery of colorectal cancer

ABSTRACT

Cancer of the colon and the rectum is the third neoplasm in order of frequency in the world population. In Cuba, the distribution of mortality is comparable with that of the developed countries, occupying cancer mortality rate the second place in all ages, except in the 1-4 year-old group. Once diagnosed and treated, an adequate follow-up of patients is of vital importance for the detection of local recurrences, metastases, premalignant lesions, and metachronic tumors. For this, undoubtedly, the endoscopic study is the one that provides the most reliable data in the assessment and follow-up of these patients. A feedback among attending physicians is extremely necessary (oncologists and/or surgeons) and endoscopists to know what to look for in the colonoscopy and specify the existence of metachronic lesions (benign or malignant). A prospective, descriptive study was conducted in relation to the indications for follow-up colonoscopies performed by attending physicians in the period from March 2001 to March 2009 and the statistical analysis was based on a percentage study. A consensus about the data that should be expressed in the applications for follow-up endoscopy in patients who underwent surgery of colorectal cancer is of great usefulness for the correct assessment and the early treatment of relapses and metachronic or premalignat lesions.
