ABSTRACT

Surgery occupies a priority place within the organization of health services. In the IMSS around 1.4 million surgeries are performed an-nually and 3934 take place each day. A great part of the resources goes to obstetric inter-ventions, since 222 928 caesarean sections were performed in 2004, and along with curet-tages, tubal occlusions and histerectomies, they sum 37.6 % of the surgeries performed in 2004. Abdominal deliveries (caesarean sections) were done in 39 % of the pregnancies delivered in the IMSS and 8.3 % were done in adolescents. Simple surgical interventions were also im-portant. Cholecystectomies were 6 times more frequent in women aged 20 to 59 years old than in men the same age. Among the main inter-ventions we also describe hernioplasty, appen-dicetomies, amigdalectomies, rhinoplasties, biopsies and circumcisions. Scarce data on complications are registered and no data is avai-lable for infections of surgical wounds. Surgical procedures are more frequent in women and in certain specialities.
