ABSTRACT
Introduction. Leptine is an adipokine synthesized
and secreted mainly by adipose tissue, whose
concentration is proportional to the mass of this
tissue, while metabolic syndrome is a complex
and heterogeneous clinical entity with a strong
genetic component, in patients with generally
higher amounts of adipose tissue.
Objective. Evaluate the concentrations of leptin
and its correlation with the components of
metabolic syndrome (MS) and BMI.
Materials and Methods. Transverse and
correlation observational studies made during the
period of May-September of 2011 included 50
women between 30-50 years old with metabolic
syndrome (MS) evaluated according to the ATPIII
criteria, determined by serum leptin levels.
A descriptive and inferential statistic in the
SPSSv19
® program was used to evaluate the
results. Patient anonymity and confidentiality
were respected in creating and reporting results.
Results. 50 women were evaluated, average
age of 41.8±6.7 years, with an average BMI of
32.9±5.9 kg/m
2, and average leptin concentration
of 41.9±16.2 ng/dL. Of the components of MS,
100% of the patients had a waist index ≥88cm,
followed by hypertriglyceridemia in 80% of
them, and hypoalphalipoproteinemia in 75% of
them. A correlation was found between the leptin
concentrations and waist index and also between
the leptin concentrations and BMI with “r” values
of 0.306 and 0.439 respectively, with a p ‹0.05
in both correlations.
Conclusions. Weak correlations were found
between leptin concentrations with both waist
index and BMI, however; the correlation found
between leptin concentrations and BMI were
higher.
