ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cultural practices conducted at the hospital by medical care teams can affect the nutritional status of the patient.
Objective: To get to know the current state of hospital
feeding and nutritional care processes 8 years after the first enquiry.
Methods: Clinical charts of 460 patients surveyed as part of the Cuban Study of Hospital Malnutrition were audited. Findings were reduced according with indicators of quality previously advanced. Utilization rates of Artificial nutrition techniques were examined. Obtained results were compared with those annotated in the previous study.
Results: Improvement in 10 out of 19 indicators of the hospital feeding and nutritional care processes was observed. The number of clinical charts with an annotated
diagnosis of malnutrition within the list of the patient’s health problem was increased. More patients was measured and weighted on admission. Serum Albumin and Total Lymphocytes Counts appeared in a higher number of charts. The number of patients on Nils Per Oris was reduced.
Conclusions: Improvement in the conduction of hospital feeding and nutritional care processes was
observed. This change can only be attributed to the impact of the PRINUMA Program for Feeding, Nutritional and Metabolic Intervention carried out by the Nutritional Support Group in the institution for the last 12 years of existence.
