ABSTRACT
Fetal development is characterized by sequential patterns of organ and tissue growth and maturation determined by maternal milieu, uterine-placental function and the genetic
growth potential that is inherent to the fetus. Limitation of this potential growth is termed Intrauterine Growth Retardation (IUGR). Physiopathological alterations accompanying this entity contribute to derangement of
intestinal function, and increase the occurrence of nutritional disorders during extrauterine life. Rats bred according with an IUGR. model induced after ligature of uterine arteries of the mother’s uterine horns showed diminished values of somatometric, biochemical and
morphofunctional variables of the study. Descriptive variables of the intestinal morphofunction associated closely with nutritional indicators used in the description of the animal’s nutritional status. Results discussed
sustain the usefulness of the restrictive model used in this study.
