ABSTRACT
Objective: To characterize the approach and identify the degree of priority in political and sanitary agendas as well as the strategies for the management of visual disability in the Americas in the context of International Health.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted with a bibliographic search for the approach of visual disabilities, management strategies and their degree of priority in the region.
Results: The approach of visual impairment in the Americas is a complex topic, of great social and economic impact, which lacks reliable statistical data and is also scarce, outdated and inaccurate. Cuba, with the Operation Miracle solidarity based program, demonstrated a viable option for approaching this health problem.
Conclusions: There is a lack of integration among the main actors that have the obligation to ensure equity and access to health services, and economic and gender differences constitute important barriers for better indicators.
