ABSTRACT
Objective: To determine the anatomo–pathological and demographic characteristic of the brain metastases of a group of deceased’s in the Hospital “Dr. Carlos J. Finlay” during the period: January of 1976 – December of the 2006.
Methods: It was carried out a traverse retrospective descriptive observational study of 1177 autopsies with metastatic tumor. It was used as source the Registrations of Autopsies.
Results: Of the 1177 deceased’s with metastasis, 204 (17.3 %) presented intracranial metastasis; 65.2% of masculine sex and 34,8 % feminine. The lung constituted the most frequent localization in the primary tumors, and carcinoma epidermoide was the prevailing histological variant. The intracranial solitary metastasis had the biggest incidence in the sample, being the parietal localization of these the most numerous.
Conclusions: In patients with metastasis, the intracranial lesions occupy a high frequency. In our study was interesting the low metastatic incidence that presented the skin and the lung to the brain.
