Effect of the body mass index on the sperm quality of patients genomic subfertil

ABSTRACT
Background: Overweight in infertile subjects is related to a dis- order in
hormone environment affecting reproductive processes of women and men.
Objective: To correlate values of body mass index with sperm parameters
of infertile patients attending to Fertility Center IECH.
Patients and method: A prospective and observational study of consecutive
patients attending to Fertility Center IECH to be submitted to a spermiogram
or sperm capacitation because of infertility, from June 2011 to October 2012.
Weight, size and body mass index were measured. Medical history was
obtained from each patient; subjects with diabetes, high blood pressure,
metabolic diseases and drug intake (steroids, hormones) were excluded.
Results: The only value showing statistic significance in studied population
about body mass index was sperm level; however, when doing univariate
lineal regression of each variable studied, there were no statistic significant
results. However, there was no a significant representation. When doing
multiple regression models with each dependent variable, there was no
either statistic significance in any model. Smoking was the only factor with
statistic significance in the morphology model, according to World Health
Organization.
Conclusions: Body mass index had no effect on sperm quality of patients
attending to our fertility center. However, this work has to be done in
a prospective and multicenter manner with a homogeneous control of
studied patients.
