ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the electromagnetic field-based treatment for fatigue caused by multiple sclerosis.
Material and method: A prospective, explanatory, experimental and longitudinal study was conducted in 36 patients with fatigue, who had been examined and diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the Psychomotor Evaluation Laboratory of the International Center of Neurological Restoration. To this end, the modified Fatigue Impact Scale (FIS) was used before and after treatment with the Cuban 1750-1 magnetic bed (50 gauss intensity) applied to the whole body for 20 minutes. The
Kolmogorov-Sminov statistical tests verified the normal distribution whereas the
Chi-Square test served to check the variance homogeneity; in such cases where the latter was achieved, t-test was used for the comparison and the level of significance was p ‹ 0.05.
Results: the sample was composed of women (83.3%) aging 20 to 40 years. The progressive secondary clinical form was the most frequent, with moderate fatigue intensity and 6 months and over of evolution. Fatigue was one of the
most disabling symptoms in those patients. The application of low-frequency electromagnetic fields reduced the fatigue intensity, that is, the physical cognitive and psychosocial fatigue.
Conclusions: the electromagnetic field-based treatment increases the efficacy of the neurorehabilitating treatment of multiple sclerosis patients with fatigue.
