ABSTRACT
Objective: To evaluate the clinical characteristics and the postarthroscopy rehabilitating treatment of patients diagnosed with septic knee arthritis.
Method: A retrospective and quasi-experimental study was conducted in patients clinically and lab diagnosed with septic knee arthritis and seen at the arthroscopy and rehabilitation service of the Cuban National Rheumatology Center from September, 2008 to October, 2009. The evaluation instrument was the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC).
Results: Females predominated (62.5%), with 5 patients, and the average age was 57.1 ± 16.2 years. All the patients felt pain and heat in the affected knee, 75% had fever and swelling whereas 87.5% had functional limitations.
Staphylococcus aureus was most frequently found germ in patients (62.5%). Among the risk factors, previous arthroscopy prevailed in 4 patients (50%) followed by rheumatoid arthritis (25%). All patients improved their condition after rehabilitation according to IKDC form. The average torque, as well as strength and power increased in the two patients who underwent testing and isokinetic training.
Conclusions: All these patients had clinical features and risk factors inherent to the disease. There was improvement in all patients who received customized and interdisciplinary rehabilitation after the arthroscopy, with recovery and re-incorporation to their daily activities.
