National List of Toxicology, a challenge for debate

ABSTRACT
Introduction: The Nacional List of Toxicology (LINATOX) was created in 2001 as a tool for facilitating communication among a group of specialists with common interests.Objetive: to analyze the functioning of LINATOX since its foundation in March 2001 up to December 2007.
Methods: asearch and manual counting was carried out on the Server of the list so as to determine indicators such as: content and monthly average of the messages sent, distribution of the subscribers according to the institutions where they work, provinces and professions.
Results: a totality of 704 messages circulated by the list. There were 155 specialist subscribed to the list working at different institutions belonging to: investigation centers, hospitals, universities, antitoxic centers, ministeries, Community Centers for Mental Health (CCSM) and polyclinics. The provinces with higher number of subscribers were: Ciudad de la Habana, La Habana, and Camaguey. Sancti Spíritus and Las Tunas provinces did not have subscribers. According to the content, the largest numbers of messages corresponded to: news, bibliographic information, information for training, general data, clinical cases, questionaries and help request. The professions of the subscribers were: toxicologists, researchers, pharmacists, physicians, professors, veterinarians and pharmacologists.
Conclusions: LINATOX is an important means of communication, as evidenced by the results. It is necessary to find a way to encourage the professionals for debating important topics about Toxicology, in order to provide a better sense to the list.
