Ethylene glycol poisoning

ABSTRACT

Three cases of acute intoxication with ethylene glycol are reported. Their clinical spectrum varies between mild and severe. They were notified to the Centro Nacional de Toxicología (National Center of Toxicology), on November 2010 and March 2011. This substance of wide industrial use is a relatively frequent cause of poisoning and can provoke a clinical picture very similar to that of methanol. The toxicokinetic and toxicodynamic characteristics of this agent are pointed out. It was concluded that, the toxicity of ethylene glycol depends upon the ingested dose, the previous health conditions of the patient and the rapidity and quality of the medical assistance.
