ABSTRACT
Objectives: to outline emigration of physicians in Guyana from International Health perspective, to determine its magnitude, to identify factors that might influence on it and to propose measures to implement for decreasing.
Methods: This is a qualitative study in which document review and analysis were carried out including WHO/PAHO Cooperation Strategy in Guyana for 2008-2012, the Strategic Plan of Guyana Ministry of Health for 2008-2012, the 2007 Cuba-Guyana Bilateral Cooperation Agreement, as
well as available migration information on PAHO and WHO pages and other sources. It was prepared a survey that after being validated, it was applied to newly graduated physicians and aspects related to this subject matter were
identified.
Results: Physician migration is not properly identified as a problem by this country authority. There is no official policy to decrease it either. In descending order, the factors that may influence migration are seeking better wages, scientific improvement, as well as obtaining better working conditions. The measures proposed include increasing wages, providing opportunities for scientific development, improving conditions of work and the use of other incentives.
Conclusions: Guyanese physicians' emigration is one of the highest in the world. In our paper there are identified factors favoring it as low wages, lack of professional development and poor working conditions. Measures that can reduce migration are proposed, such as providing medical specialties in this country, raising wages and improving the conditions of work.
