ABSTRACT
Nutritional status of 408 children younger than 5 years old (Boys: 52.4%) registered in the county of Baie-de-Henne (District of Môle-Saint-Nicolas, Department of Nord-Ouest,
Republic of Haiti), and considered as of “extreme poverty”; was established from current values of Height and Weight for Age compared with those prescribed by the National Health Center Statistics (NCHS) and the World Health Organization (WHO). Nutritional survey was conducted between October 2007 and Sepiember 2008. Child was considered as “Well nourished” if the value of the anthropometric variable in question fell within ± 2 standard deviations from the median according with NCHS/WHO standards for sex and age. Nutritional status of boys and girls was distributed as follows:
Well nourished: 31.1%;
Height lower for Age: 56.4%;
Weight lower for Age: 3.4%; and
Weight higher for Age: 9.1%; respectively. In addition, BMI for Age calculated from Height and Weight current values of 253 boys and girls with ages between 2–5 years was distributed following percentiles advanced
by NHCS/WHO:
Weight insufficient for Height
(BMI ‹ 5
th percentile for sex and age): 11.1%;
Well nourished (BMI between 5
th and 85
th percentiles, without including this last value): 71.1%;
Overweight (BMI between 85th and 95
th percentiles, without including this last value): 12.3%; and
Obesity (BMI ≥ 95
th percentile): 5.5%; respectively. High prevalence of chronic undernutrition in children with short ages living
in a county labeled as of “extreme poverty” calls for approaching the problem of childhood nutrition in a urgent, comprehensive and most effective manner.
