ABSTRACT
This work describes an experimental model developed with 32 weeks old, male Wistar rats for assessing the influence of aging upon selected indicators of nutritional status and body composition. Body weight, protein content of skeletal muscle, creatinine urinary excretion, serum albumin, serum cholesterol, and total lymphocyte count were determined. A reduction of protein content of skeletal muscle was
observed, along with a lowering of the creatinine urinary excretion. However, an increase in body weight was observed, perhaps at the expense of body fat, as suggested by the
rise in serum cholesterol. Serum albumin and total lymphocyte count were constants, implying that plasma proteins pool and immune system are not affected by aging, at least to the extent that it causes changes in the indicators describing them. Results obtained with
experimental model presented in this article might explain changes observed in nutritional status and body composition of elderlies, and thus, be of help in the development of effective intervention strategies.
