ABSTRACT
Objectives: identify the Cuban scientific production about health registered in PubMed database in the period 2010-2012, examine its behavior on the basis of variables of interest with the purpose of raising its international visibility, and analyze its correspondence with the development of the National Health System. Methods: an analysis was conducted of Cuba's contribution as compared to two other Latin American countries: Colombia and Venezuela. The contribution of health institutions to such scientific production was determined, and an evaluation was carried out of the availability of institutional and human resources in the country's health sector.
Results: in 2011 and 2012 Cuba occupied the sixth place among selected Latin American countries. Cuban scientific publications in foreign journals and in English language increased in the study period. On the other hand, there was a decrease in the number of clinical trial reports processed by PubMed. The contribution of institutions from other government agencies slightly exceeded that of health institutions. The most productive health institution was "Pedro Kouri" Tropical Medicine Institute. The University of Havana stood out among institutions from other government agencies.
Conclusions: There is a significant lack of correspondence between the available infrastructure, human resources, and the number of Cuban scientific publications about health registered in PubMed between 2010 and 2012.
