ABSTRACT
Introduction: the opinion the patient has on his-her psychosocial adjustment and personal satisfactions, allows knowing a group of risk factors that influence in a direct way in his-her quality of life.
Objective: to determine the risk factors of psychosocial disorders in adult patients suffering
from epilepsy.
Methods: this concern an analytic observational and retrospective cohort study, conducted in 200 patients that attended to external consultation of Joaquin Albaran Surgical Clinical Hospital between December of 2010 and April of 2013. Washington Psychosocial Seizure Inventory
(WPSI), Wechsler Adults Intelligence Scale (WAIS) and an Epilepsy Questionnaire for Risk Factors were applied. The statistical Chi-Square Distributionwas used, the Odds Ratio was calculated (OR) and confidence intervals (CI) were built to 95%.
Results: 58% of the patients referred an acceptable and good psychosocial functioning and the deficit of the intelligence appeared in 33% of the patients. The psychosocial functioning is affected by the high frequency of seizures (p=0.0333; OR 3.5) and because of a sub-normal
intelligence (p=0.0000; OR 3.8), which also influences in the adjustment to treatment (p=0.0062; OR 2.4), however, this previous mention characteristic tends to favor family and school overprotection (p=0.0008; OR 0.3).
Conclutions: the frequent seizures and a low IQ (Intelligence Quotient) affect psychosocial behavior of the epileptic patient, although presenting a subnormal intelligence inspire family protection.
