ABSTRACT
Malignant otitis externa, is a disease whose diagnosis and treatment is
a challenge for any specialist. It is a severe infection that affects the ear
canal (bone / cartilage) and adjacent soft tissues. Usually affecting immunocompromised
patients, being diabetes mellitus the most associated
condition with up to 65% of cases. In most cases the causative agent
is
Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Diagnosis should be based on a medical
history and complete physical examination, correlating the findings with
laboratory and imaging studies. Antibiotic therapy with activity against
P. aeruginosa is the mainstay of treatment. Even with proper diagnosis
and treatment it is associated with a mortality rate of 20%. In this article,
We report the case of a diabetic patient managed with third-generation
cephalosporin pseudomonal activity and a review of the literature.
