ABSTRACT
Background: Hospital-acquired infections represent nowadays one of the
most frequent complications seen in patients at the neonatal intensive
care unit. These infections substantially increase medical care costs
due to a longer length of stay and the need of antibiotics and more
sophisticated strategies of control, besides to increase morbidity and
mortality rates.
Material and method: prospective and descriptive analysis in a period
of 12 months (April 2011 to March 2012), a registry of procedures or
invasive dispositives (endotracheal tube, vascular catheters, surgical
wounds and urinary catheters) was kept at the Regional Hospital Lic.
Adolfo López Mateos. Weigh, genre, type of procedure, length of stay,
association of a HAI, type of infection, discharge status, isolated germs
and antibiotics were recorded. Results were collected and analyzed
with STATA statistical software.
Results: They are presented as relative risk, confidence interval, p value
(Student’s t and Fisher exact test), and compared with results presented
in other communications.
