ABSTRACT
Introduction. Many techniques have been proposed for elongation in children with bone shortening. One of them is progressive lengthening with external fixators with or without the use of bone grafts at the end of period elongation. Objective. Conduct analysis of patients undergoing bone elongation through callostasis by bone fixator designed in the Hospital Juárez de México (HJM). Material and methods. Review was performed in 34 patients for whom bone elongation were performed with an external fixator with a pattern made by Dr. Sergio Gómez Llata-García, head of Pediatric Orthopedics Module in the HJM with age range from 4 to 14 years, with an average age of 9 years. Results. We studied 34 patients with preoperative shortening which was an average of 5 cm, traumatic causes were more frequent with 16 patients on the other hand commonly elongated bone was the femur in 24 patients. On average elongation was achieved 5 cm, with maximum time of five months consolidation, infection at the site of entry of the nails was the most frequent complication presented with 11 cases, and the final results were good in 88.2% of patients. Conclusions. Bone elongation in pediatric age, with self-designed external fixator HJM, represents a useful method which gives good results with a low complication rate, making it a useful and inexpensive, and easy to perform appropriate distraction rate and rhythm.REFERENCES
